v1.5.0 — Mercury Desktop

Mercury gets an app.

1.5.0 ships Mercury Desktop for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows and Linux, at the same version as the runtime. It installs Mercury on your computer without a terminal, or connects to Mercury on a server, and it keeps both up to date. Download it.

Mercury Desktop

  • Install or connect. The first screen finds a Mercury on this computer, installs one (the release is checked against its SHA-256 checksums and runs as a service), or connects to Mercury elsewhere. Several connections at once. See Install & first run.
  • Not code-signed yet. A downloaded installer asks once before the first launch; the download page has the steps. On a Mac, curl -fsSL https://mercuryagent.sh/install-desktop.sh | sh installs it with no prompt (it checks the download's SHA-256 first). Updates are signed and checked before they install.

Remote access the owner controls

  • Tunnels are remote. Requests through Tailscale, Cloudflare or a proxy are no longer treated as coming from this computer, even when the tunnel runs on the same machine.
  • New devices need your approval, with a 5-character code you answer from Telegram, WhatsApp, the terminal or Mercury Desktop on this computer.
  • Sensitive actions from a remote device ask you first: the terminal (off for remote devices by default), Allow All, the workspace folder, powerful bots, plugins and skills from a URL, channel tokens, Cloud sign-in, restarts and the password.
  • Device lifecycle: devices unused for 30 days are signed out, 10 devices at most, a new address tells you, revoking cuts open connections.
  • /server, mercury server and mercury doctor --security. Plus a sign-in attempt limit, CSRF and DNS-rebinding protection, and a security log.

See Remote access & security.

Updates that never leave you broken

  • One signed update notice says what's new, what's required and anything Mercury needs to tell you. An unsigned or older notice is ignored, and being offline never blocks anything.
  • Server updates wait for running work, download with checksums, back up, install, confirm the new version answers, and roll back on their own if it doesn't. mercury upgrade uses the same steps.
  • Mercury Desktop has a Chrome-style Update button, an updates panel for the app and every server, resumable signed downloads, Check for updates and Update everything.
  • Required updates get a full-screen notice that only a ticked checklist gets past, for a while.

See Updating Mercury.

Research you can watch

Research is one visible run: a plan you can edit, live progress, every source read or failed with the reason, and a report even when a run is cut short. Reports are saved to ~/mercury-artifacts/Research and export as PDF or Word.

Files in one place

What Mercury makes goes in ~/mercury-artifacts, one folder per chat, instead of loose files in your home folder.

MCP servers

Mercury can use tools from Model Context Protocol servers. Add one with mercury mcp add, allow the tools you want, and every MCP call asks first in Ask Me mode. See MCP Servers.

Bots 2.0

Every bot run ends by reporting, saying there was nothing new, or saying it failed. Results wait in an inbox until you read them. Waste is capped by rule: a minimum gap between routine runs, tools by group, and a routine that keeps failing switches itself off.

Upgrading

mercury upgrade

Or download Mercury Desktop and choose Use the Mercury here: it offers to update an older Mercury first.
